Technology Snapshot: Cost Analysis of 3G Phones - W-CDMA vs CDMA2000
The costs and technical obstacles of deploying 3G network infrastructure have received substantial coverage worldwide. The challenges of developing 3G handsets capable of delivering compelling new services to consumers at reasonable cost have received perhaps less attention, although handsets are equally essential to the commercial success of 3G in a competitive wireless marketplace. Portelligent has now conducted full “product teardown” analyses of three of the early W-CDMA-based FOMA cellular phones, manufactured by three different Japanese electronics firms, as well as a CDMA2000 phone produced by Samsung in Korea. The data from these analyses provide insight into how the competition in 3G is evolving in Asia, but also highlight lessons for Europe and the US.
