Product Trend Update: Camera Phones Flourish in South Korea

Korean cellular phone makers have trailed the Japanese in the development and market evolution of the “camera phone”, but they are coming on strong. In Japan, Sharp introduced the first camera phone (the J-SH04, which was deployed by wireless service provider J-Phone) in fourth quarter 2000, and the portion of the overall handset market represented by camera phones grew rapidly in 2001 and 2002. In the Korean market, camera phones began to attract consumer attention in 2002, with rapid sales growth in 2003.

Although Korean handset makers such as Samsung, LG, and Pantech & Curitel, have trailed their Japanese competitors to the camera phone market, they emerged in 2003 as formidable players, not only in Korea, but in global markets, where they may be better positioned for market-share growth than the Japanese.

This Portelligent Product Trend Update provides brief coverage of the following topics:

• Evolution of the Korean Camera Phone Market

• Korean Handset Makers in the Global Camera Phone Market

• Representative Korean Camera Phones

• Key Trends in Component Technologies

• Strategic Commentary and Prospects for the Future

Also included is an extensive table that identifies and provides data on over 80 camera phones currently offered by Korean handset makers.
